Human growth and development instruction is available to students in the Turner Schools as part of the district's health education curriculum and other related curriculum and support programs. The district provides instruction and services for students in grade kindergarten through twelve. The complete curriculum and instructional materials are available for inspection by notifying the building principal. In accordance with state law and established procedures, no student shall be required to take courses or participate in units of the human growth and development curriculum if his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) files a written objection to such offerings with the building principal. Students in fourth and fifth grade will each have a short presentation on Human Growth and Development in the spring. Issues involving growth and adolescence are presented and discussed via an informational video. Parents may view the curriculum for this session at any time. Parents may also choose to have their child exempt from participating in this activity. Parents will not be allowed to sit in the classroom during our Human Growth and Development lessons. Parents not comfortable with this may exempt their children from participating in writing to the building principal. Students exempted from human growth and development instruction will still receive instruction (unless exempted) in knowledge of physiology and hygiene, sanitation, the effects of controlled substances and alcohol upon the human system, symptoms of disease and the proper care of the body, knowledge of effective means by which students may recognize, avoid, prevent and halt physically or psychologically intrusive or abusive situations which may be harmful to students.
